Mangalesh Dabral
Born: 16 May 1948, Kafalpani, Tehri Garhwal, U.P.
Poet, journalist and translator.

Published three collections of poems: Pahar par lalten (1981), Ghar ka rasta (1988), Ham jo dekhate hain (1995), a travel Dairy, Ek bar Iowa (1996) and a collection of articles, Lekhak ki roti (1998).

Awarded Omprakash Smriti Samman (1982), Shrikant Verma Puraskar (1989), Shamsher Samman (1995), and Pahal Samman (1996).

Poems have been translated and published in all major Indian languages and in English, Russian, German, Polish, Spanish, Bulgarian languages. Included in various anthologies, such as 'Periplus' (ed. Daniel Weissbort and Arvind Krishna Mehrotra), 'Survival' (ed. Daniel Weissbort and Girdhar Rathi), 'Gestures' (an anthology of poems from SAARC countries and 'Signatures' (ed. K. Satchidanandan).

Has translated from English into Hindi works of Berlolt Brecht, Hans Magnus Enzensberger, Yannis Ritsos, Ernesto Cardenal, Pablo Neruda, Dora Gaben, Stanca Pencheva, Zbigniew Herbert etc. Co-transator of Herman Hesse's novel 'Siddhartha' and Nabarun Bhattacharya's poems 'Yeh Mrityupatyaka Nahin Hai Mera Desh'. Edited an anthology of teacher-poets of Rajasthan, Ret ghari.

Travelled and gave poetry readings in Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia and Russia. Visited Iowa city as fellow of International Writing Programme at the University of Iowa.

At present he is an assistant editor in Jansatta, Hindi daily published by the Indian Express Group.
